Befriending Singa

Some 1,000 primary and secondary school students received their Friend of Singa (FOS) awards at the University Cultural Centre on 20 Sep, marking the end of the six-month initiative by SKM.

A total of 132 schools (88 Primary and 44 Primary) took part in this year’s FOS, an increase from last year’s participation rate of 105 schools. Guest of Honour, Minister for Education Mr Heng Swee Keat presented Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards to the students at the ceremony. Chairman SKM Council, Mr Koh Poh Tiong, presented the Merit awards to the other participants.

During the grading process, judges from the SKM Council noted that many more entries had adopted online tools and social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, to spread the message of kindness.

One team took the concept of Twitter and adapted it, creating a ‘Follow Me’ board for each class, to encourage students to record their acts of kindness and inspiring others to ‘follow’ the actions as well.

When FOS first started in 1990, it was used to encourage students to display acts of kindness. Since its revamp in 2009, FOS has aimed to further engage students. Now participants have to think of creative and unique solutions to tackle issues of graciousness in their schools. Teams are given up to six months and are funded up to $150 to impact the school community positively.
