Singa Says - December 2009

Clearing Up for Kindness

Visited a fast-food restaurant recently? Then our bright and colourful cartoon-styled stickers and tent-cards must have surely caught your eye!

The collaterals are part of our new programme “Let’s All Clear Up Before We Go”. Using quirky designs is simply a fun way to remind diners to return their trays and to be more considerate to others at fast-food outlets.

StickerLaunched on 14 Jan by Parliamentary Secretary for MICA and MTI, Mr Sam Tan, participating restaurants include KFC, Long John Silver’s, McDonald’s, MOS Burger, Subway and Superdog.

Clearing up our trays may be a very simple gesture, but it can mean the world to others!

Singa is a National Icon

Singa has been chosen as one of 100 National Icons that have defined Singapore over the years.

The Design Society, a non-profit organisation with the objective of raising the general standard of design in Singapore, selected Singa and put up a pioneer exhibition featuring other memorable symbols such as the logos from Singapore Airlines, People’s Association and DBS Bank.

Visitors to the exhibition were able to learn about the origins and development of Singa along with these other trademarks that proved to be significant to Singapore’s social history and visual culture. The exhibition was held at the National Library Building from 23 to 29 Jan.

Super Kindness

Did you know that Singa has a superhero counterpart? Meet Captain Kindness who supports and promotes kindness in Australia!

He is a master in Tai-Kind-Do, is immune from lies; insults and bad names, and has a sidekick – Ms Courtesy. His weakness? Having no hug in one day makes him lose his powers! And just like Singa, he has a super smile, and is super kind!

Captain Kindness is part of the Australian Kindness Movement’s initiative in spreading kindness to everyone.

An nyoung, Singapore!

A small delegation of five Korean government officials from Dobong Council visited SKM on 25 Jan to learn more about how we spearhead Singapore’s initiatives in spreading kindness.

The Korean team had been on a study trip with the intention to learn more about how other countries promote kind practices at the work environment, and towards each other. Singapore was one of their destinations.

We are grateful to meet and share with fellow advocates of kindness from other countries, and we look forward to host other like-minded friends in the future.

Striking A Kind Note

Jack and Rai first met while performing at a local bar. After enjoying jam sessions together, they eventually formed their band in 2002. Since then, they have been known for doing great covers of songs from popular bands like U2, Coldplay and Oasis (just to name a few). In 2006, they decided to make that transition from being a cover band to penning their own compositions.

Here they share their thoughts on kindness and their career.

What is kindness to you?
Jack: We believe in sharing kindness every chance we get. It's the right thing to do.

How is it the right thing to do?
Jack: Sometimes we're up, and sometimes we're down. But if we all did something nice for each other, no matter how small, it can make a real difference.

Has kindness played a part in your lives as artistes?
Rai: We've been fortunate. Kindness has played a great part in our lives as we were going from being a cover band to being original artistes.

How so?
Rai: Sometimes, when we needed to do a few extra takes after our studio time had run out, the guys would let us play on!

How has this experience made you feel about kindness?
Rai: I feel I should always do the same.
