Goodness Gracious!
WOULD you lend a helping hand to the elderly, the disabled or to pregnant women?
If the results of the “State of Graciousness in Singapore” survey is anything to go by, we are a far from gracious society.
Only 37% out of 1000 Singaporeans interviewed were happy with the level of graciousness in Singapore. That’s a drop, compared to last year’s 45% .
That’s not all. There’s been a decline in helpfulness perceived among students – only 53% in the survey felt that students were willing to help one another, compared to 64% last year.
It’s not all bad news though.
The survey, which was conducted by the Singapore Kindness Movement, found that our graciousness index – an indication of how citizens rate the level of graciousness within society – climbed just 3 points from 58 last year to 61 this year.
Singaporeans will have to work harder at being gracious when next year’s survey includes views from foreigners.
“We’d like to know how people see us and we’ll be looking at the expatriate community, foreign workers in Singapore and how visitors to Singapore view us” said Teh Thien Yew, General Manager of the Singapore Kindness Movement.
